One of my favorite things to do when building furniture or cabinets is transforming people’s homes and rooms from “meh” to “wow”
Here is a fun example from this month (Sept 2024).
Here is the story: This nice couple emailed me though my website saying they were on a new adventure and chapter of their lives. They pulled up their North Dakota roots and moved here to Idaho to retire but more importantly spend lots of time with their grandchildren (and children, but many grandchildren:)
They were going to build up in Cascade, but the prices were not working out (Building costs in Cascade can be brutal right now); instead they found a very nice home on Mores Creek below Idaho City. It has acreage, a river front gazebo, shop building and many other fabulous features.
The house itself is a beautifully crafted home with amazing hickory hardwood floors (the real deal), meticulously crafted wood work, timber frame style beam work, many log accents, and aspen stools in a custom built stain grade kitchen. Okay you get it, nice right? But there is always something when you buy a house someone else designed that really could use work. One of those on the list was the master bedroom.
The Master was just blah, hollow core flat stained doors, boring trim and a closet that was was probably not designed by a woman, because it was way too small:)
So they wanted to give it a face lift and make it a warm comfortable space. They like the log furniture look and started their search. They found okay stuff but nothing that had the wow factor. Until they found our site and checked out our gallery. When they contacted me they said they were so impressed and wanted a beautiful bedroom set with a 6 drawer dresser and a king bed with drawers built into it (remember small closet, storage space needed!)
And was happy to ask them some questions and found out what style they liked. It is fun to make beds to personal preferences and a challenge as well. We customized the size of the dresser to fit their space and I got to work on it.
A few days later they asked me about a corner unit to install an electric fireplace. Well I haven’t done one of those for probably 10 years, but we worked together to come up with a design and function of the unit. Some of the unique aspects it needed to accommodate were electrical outlets, forced air vent, and a ceiling to floor window. We worked it out, I made a drawing and got to start on a very fun project (I love building unique special pieces for customers:)
I ended up finishing it up in just under 3 weeks and went up to install it. In a few hours I had the fireplace unit in, the electric fireplace fired up, and the bedroom set in place!
They were so happy and the wife said she couldn’t wait to watch Disney Princess movies with her granddaughters and hang out all day in their new space! They literally said I transformed their room and they were so happy.
I wrapped up my day and they said the next upgrade was going to be some solid wood doors (yup I build these too) I am looking forward to helping them transform their house even more and make it their home just a little more.
Here is a little video of the fireplace in action:)
